TOPIC

The general election is right around the corner and voter suppression is something that neither of us have really had learned about in depth. This sparked our own curiosity to do more research on it. It's important that we are all aware of voter suppression because it affects a large percentage of minority voters.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • What is voter suppression: according to DemandTheVote.com, Voter suppression, by definition, is any effort, either legal or illegal, by way of laws, administrative rules, and/or tactics that prevents eligible voters from registering to vote or voting

  • Common types of voter suppression

  • The history of voter suppression:

  • The story of Clarence Gaskins -- read directly from the Brennan Center for Justice

  • The historic implications of Voting Rights Act of 1965

  • Shelby County v. Holder

  • Gerrymandering

  • Voter ID Laws

  • Inefficient and insufficient polling places

  • Most importantly, what you can do to help mitigate voter suppression.
